Why Masking Your PAN Number Matters
Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) is critical to your financial identity in India. Sharing your unmasked PAN when it is not strictly required for tax purposes exposes you to financial fraud and unauthorized profiling.
The Income Tax Department requires your full PAN for tax filing, but many private organizations only need partial details. Masking your PAN before sharing documents is a crucial step in preventing identity theft.

Common Use Cases for PAN Masking
- Insurance Forms: When submitting proofs for policies where full tax identification isn't necessary.
- Rental Agreements: Landlords may ask for PAN, but a masked version is usually sufficient for identity verification.
- Investment KYC Submissions: Mask your PAN during preliminary stages of KYC processing to protect your data.
- Employer Onboarding Documents: Limit data exposure when providing initial onboarding documents to HR.
How Our 100% Private Masking Works
Most free online tools upload your files to a remote server. This means copies of your unmasked PAN card could remain on their servers, vulnerable to breaches.
Our PAN Masking tool eliminates this risk completely by processing everything entirely on your device. We use Tesseract.js (WASM) for scanned images and pdf.js for digital PDFs to detect the standard 10-character PAN format. You visually confirm the redactions, and the file is permanently masked locally. Your PAN card never touches the internet.
When should you share a masked PAN instead of the full number?
Your PAN doesn't always need to be fully visible. The Income Tax Department and CBDT guidance supports using a masked PAN for non-tax contexts where only the format needs verifying, not the specific number:
Masked PAN is generally acceptable for:
- KYC verification for rentals and rental agreements
- Marketplace seller/buyer verification (e-commerce platforms)
- Gig platform onboarding (delivery, ride-share)
- Club, gym, or hotel registration
- Any context where PAN format matters more than the specific number
Full, unmasked PAN is required for:
- Bank account opening (mandatory under RBI/PMLA KYC rules)
- Income tax filing and any Income Tax Department interaction
- Employer payroll setup
- Formal financial/loan documentation
In short: if the recipient needs to verify you have a valid PAN, masking is usually fine. If the recipient needs to actually use or file with your PAN, share the full number through a secure channel.
PAN format — what masking actually hides
A PAN follows the format AAAAA9999A: the first 5 letters indicate holder type and category, the next 4 digits are unique to the holder, and the final letter is a checksum. Masking the 4 numeric digits (plus optionally the surrounding letters) removes the part that's actually specific to you, while keeping the document recognizably a PAN for verification purposes.

"I constantly process lease agreements with sensitive SSNs. This tool is a lifesaver because it processes everything locally."
"Other redactors just draw a box that you can copy-paste under. PDF Pro's true rasterization actually destroys the text. Incredible."
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I mask my PAN number before sharing documents?
Masking your PAN number helps prevent identity theft, financial fraud, and unauthorized profiling by third parties who do not strictly need your full tax identification.
Can I mask PAN numbers in scanned images?
Yes, our tool supports JPG and PNG image files. It uses advanced in-browser OCR to detect PAN numbers in images without uploading them to a server.
Does this tool work on PAN card PDF files?
Absolutely. The tool can extract the text layer from digital PDFs to precisely locate and mask your PAN number.
Is my PAN data stored or transmitted during masking?
No. All processing happens locally in your web browser. Your file is never uploaded, transmitted, or stored on any server, guaranteeing 100% privacy.
Is it legal to share a masked PAN instead of the full number?
Yes — for non-tax verification purposes (KYC, rentals, marketplace onboarding), masked PAN is explicitly supported by CBDT guidance. For tax filing, banking, and payroll, the full PAN is required.
What part of my PAN gets hidden when I mask it?
Typically the 4 numeric digits that uniquely identify you, while the format-indicating letters remain visible so the document is still verifiably a PAN.
Can I mask my PAN on an image, not just a PDF?
Yes! Our tool explicitly supports securely masking PAN numbers on both JPG and PNG images, as well as PDFs. Everything is processed locally in your browser.
