Step 1 Identify the Type of Report
Before looking at a single number, identify what kind of report you have. The most common types are:

- Kidney stress pattern: High creatinine + high urea + low eGFR together = a picture that needs follow-up. Slightly elevated creatinine with normal urea and eGFR is far less concerning.
- Thyroid pattern: High TSH + low Free T4 = hypothyroidism. But high TSH alone with normal T4 = subclinical hypothyroidism, often managed with monitoring rather than medication.
Googling individual values in isolation is the fastest way to spiral into unnecessary anxiety. Always look at the whole picture together.
Step 4 Read an Imaging Report Differently
Radiology reports (MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound) have a completely different structure. Instead of numbers and ranges, they contain a radiologist's written description. Look for these three sections:
- Technique How the scan was performed (contrast vs no contrast, which body part).
- Findings A detailed description of what was observed. This is where the dense medical terminology lives.
- Impression The radiologist's summary and clinical interpretation. This is the most important section. If you only read one part, read this.
Terms like "mild degenerative changes" or "no acute findings" are generally reassuring. Phrases like "further evaluation recommended" or "cannot rule out" warrant prompt follow-up with your doctor.
Step 5 Prepare Questions for Your Doctor
Understanding your report before your appointment makes the visit far more productive. Write down:
- Which values are outside normal range, and by how much?
- Are there patterns across multiple values that point to something specific?
